Marching Band (The Sound of the Braves)
The Boone High School Marching Band is an ensemble that is comprised of the combined forces of the: Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Percussion Band,
and Color Guard. The ensemble rehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM and Thursdays from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. In addition,
sectionals will be held on Wednesday after school, times TBA. Saturday rehearsals are called as needed. This ensemble represents Boone high
school at all varsity football contests, community parades, and marching evaluations. Students are graded for their participation in marching band
by their instructor, and that grade is reflected in their respective Concert/Symphonic/Percussion/Color Guard grade.
The following statement is reprinted from the Orange County “Marching Band Review Committee” report, and represents the policy for participation in marching band as approved by the Orange County School Board:
Band Courses in Orange County are co-curricular, not extra-curricular, and music being performed is rehearsed primarily during class time. Students are being assessed on their ability to perform the literature in a satisfactory manner.
Department of Education State Course Descriptions includes the following statement: “Special Note: This
course generally requires students to participate in extra rehearsals and performances beyond regular school
hours.” In addition, OCPS Course Descriptions for High School Band I through VI state the following:
“As a co-curricular performance oriented activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances
beyond regular school hours.”
Concert Band (Freshman Band)
This is a performance oriented full credit class open designed for students entering their first year of high school band.
Students will perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music grades 2-3.
Students will demonstrate musicianship skills in a large ensemble setting relating to balance, blend, intonation, and rhythmic precision.
As a co-curricular performance activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances beyond regular school hours.
Members of this ensemble will combine with other classes to form the marching band.
Symphonic Band
This is a performance oriented full credit class open to students in any grade who have previous instrumental training.
Students will perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music grades 3-4.
Students will demonstrate musicianship skills in a large ensemble setting relating to balance, blend, intonation, and rhythmic precision.
As a co-curricular performance activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances beyond regular school hours.
Members of this ensemble will combine with other classes to form the marching band.
Wind Ensemble Band
This is a performance oriented full credit class primarily comprised of upperclassmen. Students in this ensemble will typically pursue
private instruction on their instrument. Students will perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music grades 5-6.
Students will be expected to perform with aesthetic understanding and demonstrate the ability to independently prepare music from a variety of styles and genres.
As a co-curricular performance activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances beyond regular school hours.
Members of this ensemble will combine with other classes to form the marching band.
Percussion Pit/Battery
This is a performance oriented full credit class open to students in any grade. Students will perform on a variety of percussion instruments including drums, mallet instruments, and world percussion in ensembles and alone.
Students from these classes will serve as percussionists for various performing ensembles at Boone.
As a co-curricular performance activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances beyond regular school hours.
Members of this ensemble will combine with other classes to form the marching and concert ensembles.
Jazz Band
This is a performance oriented full credit class open as a seventh period to a select group of musicians determined by audition only.
This group will perform and study jazz and pop music of various styles and time periods. Students will develop the ability to improvise over
basic chord progressions while becoming familiar with the nomenclatures of various jazz styles. As a co-curricular performance activity, attendance is required for rehearsals and performances beyond regular school hours.
Color Guard (Eurhythmics)
This is a performance oriented full credit class with content that includes understanding and demonstrating performance techniques appropriate to
various styles of music. This class meets everyday and is open to a select group of performers determined by audition only.
The color guard performs with the marching band in the fall, and competes independently as a winter guard in the spring.

Members of this ensemble will combine with other classes to form the marching band.
